Every year on the second Saturday in September, people across the world mark World First Aid Day. It is a day dedicated to raising awareness of how first aid saves lives and to encourage more people to learn these essential skills.
At Slanjava Learning Ltd, our motto is helping others to help others. First aid is one of the clearest examples of that in action. Whether it is providing reassurance after a fall, treating a burn, or responding to a life-threatening emergency, first aid skills empower us to step forward with confidence when someone needs help most.

Why First Aid Matters
Emergencies can happen anywhere. Quick action can mean the difference between life and death.
First aid reduces the severity of injuries. Effective first aid can prevent complications and speed up recovery.
It builds confidence and resilience. Knowing what to do in a crisis helps reduce panic and ensures better outcomes for everyone.
First Aid in the Workplace
For organisations, first aid is not just about compliance with legislation. It is about creating a safe, supportive environment where staff and individuals feel protected. Having trained First Aiders ensures that if an incident happens, help is immediate and effective.
The Health and Saferty (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 make this a legal duty for employers. The HSE's guidance (L74) sets out what employers need to do to meet these requirements., including:
carrying a first-aid needs assessment
providing appropriate first-aid equipment and facilities
ensuring there are suitable trained first-aiders or appointed persons available
making staff aware of the first-aid arrangements
The 2024 update to the guidance also emphasises considering employee's mental health in first-aid needs assessments and provides clearer advice on managing life-threatening bleeding and selecting competent training providers.
In health and social care, this becomes even more important. Staff often support vulnerable individuals where small accidents can escalate quickly. Being prepared makes all the difference.
